Lavazza's history
Lavazza is an Italian brand that originated in Turin. The company founded in 1895 by Luigi Lavazza was in the beginning a simple shop with many types of coffee of different origins around him. He made different blends of this. He was passionate about his work and went to investigate what the characteristics of the plant, the flavors and the different types of coffee beans did to the taste. This allowed him to create many different blends to suit every taste.
The blends and knowledge of Luigi Lavazza
After a while he went to Brazil to gain even more knowledge about coffee. He learned more about the coffee here and was able to make more blends. These blends are the idea of the time, to combine different coffees from different countries into a masterpiece. Today we still drink coffee from different countries in a cup!
The growth of Lavazza
At some point, the store moved to larger premises. The company got bigger and bigger. After the war there was a great period of growth in Turin. Fiat started making cars and Lavazza grew into a small company.
In 1927, Luigi Lavazza SpA was founded. The company consisted of Luigi Lavazza, his wife and children. During these years, Lavazza also created new packaging, which was very progressive at the time. Coffee was packed in two layers of paper so that the coffee was preserved. This gave families the opportunity to buy larger quantities of coffee. More was dropped again. After this they started to concentrate more on the packaged coffee. In 1949 the Lavazza coffee can was introduced. The coffee could be kept even better in this. In 1950, the vacuum cans were introduced under pressure. This kept the smell, aroma and quality even better.
Lavazza one of the largest companies in the coffee sector in Italy
In 1957 there was great economic growth. The company decided to ramp up production. In Italy, at one point, they were one of the largest companies in the coffee sector. Lavazza was about to conquer Europe too!
Lavazza decaffeinated coffee & the car bar
In 1959, Lavazza introduced the first decaffeinated coffee, the Lavazza Dec. Also in this year an autobar was designed. People could buy coffee outside in an original way in a mobile car bar.
Lavazza Qualita Rossa was introduced
Lavazza Rossa was introduced in 1971. The coffee was introduced in new vacuum packaging. The taste and aroma were preserved for a long time in this packaging.
Lavazza's first espresso machine
In 1989 Lavazza's first espresso machine was introduced. This was a machine that could make a coffee using a pod of prepackaged coffee. The pods were suitable for one cup of coffee per single dose. Lavazza also took over Bourbon and Suerte. This later resulted in a new blend.
The lavazza Foundation & iTierra!
In 2004, the lavazza Foundation was established. This is to improve living conditions in coffee-producing countries. Also in 2004, the iTierra! blend introduced. Through this initiative, Lavazza has improved working conditions for more than 3,000 farmers in eight countries. This did not just stop at the working conditions, it also stimulated economic growth, their living standards were raised and new, sustainable and profitable agricultural techniques were introduced. In 2012, it became iTiera! project also expanded to Brazil, India, Peru and Tanzania.
